About us
'Once you choose hope, anything’s possible' - Christopher Reeve
Born out of the needs of local people, Lochaber Hope was formed in November 2005.
We are a person centred organisation and believe that everyone has the ability within themselves to reach their own potential. Staff and volunteers work and learn closely together to make this an attractive choice; a safe, inspiring, positive environment to allow people to safely explore strengths and barriers.

Mairi Henderson
Counsellor
I am a fully qualified integrative counsellor, registered with BACP. I have experience working with clients in private, charitable, and school settings. My approach is integrative, with a strong person-centred basis, which means I will use different modalities of counselling to best fit your personal needs and goals. As well as working with adults on a range of issues, I have also done advanced training in counselling children and young people. Anxiety, depression, low mood, and self-harming behaviours can have a hugely negative effect on a young person’s life. Children often find it hard to put their thoughts and feelings into words, and that’s why working creatively with this age group can be helpful. I use tools like story building, nesting dolls, emotion cards, and “getting to know you” games to build relationships and encourage meaningful conversation. EFT (“emotional freedom technique” or “tapping”) can also be a helpful tool for some. Other areas I have a particular interest in are chronic illness and anxiety. Living with a chronic illness such as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) can be isolating and lead to anxiety or low mood. CBT (which helps interrupt negative thought patterns) and mindfulness (focusing on being present) can be particularly effective in managing the challenges of chronic illness. Anxiety is also prevalent, especially following the uncertainty of COVID and lockdowns. Our nervous system, like a smoke alarm, can become oversensitive, perceiving threats everywhere and triggering anxiety. By learning techniques to calm the body, we can influence the brain and reduce anxious thought patterns.
