Counselling

COSCA

From time to time in our lives we can all experience vulnerability and crisis periods. These often feel very overwhelming resulting in feelings of helplessness and worry about whether the situation can be resolved. We are here to let you know that there ARE people out there who are trained to help.

How Does it Work?

Only you can decide whether you want to come to counselling, our counsellors will not present solutions, make judgements or influence your decisions, however, they can help you explore and understand the dynamics of your situation, which may enable you to make certain changes in your life. Counselling is accessible,  comfortable and confidential. Disabled access is also available.

For those facing family challenges, our family therapy services offer support to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen relationships within the family unit.

The biggest step is getting in touch, please be assured you will be treated with respect, care and the utmost confidentiality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of Counselling services do you offer?

We offer a range of different counselling services across our team. Some of our services do require additional qualifications and not all counsellors are qualified in every area, please take a look through our counsellor profiles to determine which counsellor might be best placed to support you through the counselling process:

  • 1:1 General Adults (all counsellors)

  • 1:1 Child and Youth

  • Couples Counselling (Marriage, relationships, friendships)

  • Family Therapy

  • Family Mediation

Will my sessions be in-person?

Depending on your preferences, we can offer face-to-face sessions here at the Lochaber Hope office.

If you are limited on time, or live outside of Fort William, we also offer online counselling sessions via video-call. Please note that not all counsellors offer this as an option.

How long are my sessions?

All counselling sessions are 50 minutes, and there are no minimum, or maximum number of sessions required of you.

While it is good to have a standing day and time every week, fortnightly, or monthly that you attend, we do have some counsellors that offer a little more flexibility.

How much do your counselling sessions cost?

We do all the hard work to ensure that you’re getting an excellent service from a high-calibre counselling team, we have sourced funding from various places which allow us to offer you counselling sessions for low-cost, at £36.00 per 1:1 session. If your budget will not accommodate our fees, please contact us for further information about how we can further support you.

How do your waiting lists work?

If you would like to see a certain counsellor, or if you have a preference for face-to-face or a specific gender, it may be that we unfortunately do not have the availability to match you with a counsellor immediately. If this is the case, you will be offered an alternative, or the choice to go on the relevant waiting list.

If you choose to go on a waiting list, our administration person will give you an estimate of when a counsellor may be available to start working with you. As our sessions are person-centred, and led by the client, please understand that this is an estimate and it may be that the wait is longer than originally anticipated.

If you are on a waiting list, and you cannot wait any longer to see a counsellor, please contact our administration team who will offer you a place with the next available counsellor.

How does my Child/Young Person access counselling?

We are contracted through the Highland Council on behalf of the Scottish Government to provide counselling services to all children and young people who are in-school, from aged six. We offer this service to a range of local schools within Fort William, and the wider Lochaber area. If your Child or Young Person might need counselling support, this can be accessed through their guidance teacher who will complete the referral on their behalf.

All Child and Youth Counsellors have completed additional training which allows them to specialise in working with children or young people. Please do keep in mind that your young person must be open, and willing to see a counsellor and participate in counselling sessions.

Our Schools Counsellor is generally able to see your child or young person, at school during term time for Fort William schools only. For schools located outside of Fort William, the child or young person may be required to work with an online counsellor, or where possible, travel to the Lochaber Hope office for sessions.

Please note that confidentiality applies to sessions with children or young people the same as adults, please do not expect the counsellor to tell you about what information has been shared between your child/young person and their counsellor.

We have a waiting list for children and young people, this is at least two months long at all times. If your child or young person is in need of immediate support, please ask them to consider working with an online counsellor as the waiting time may be shorter.
